Note: This post is a "check in" with anti-racist rhetoric and promises we made in response to Black Lives Matter and/or in service of social justice (let's not spray empty words and statements, shall we?)
Last month I posted about attending a seminar called The Role of Artists in Social Change featuring staff from The Center for Cultural Power. They released a helpful guide about how to "activate" artist activism. The steps are straight forward (and accompanied with gorgeous illustrations - click on the image to be directed to the artists' websites):
The Narratives We Need
Voting Should Be Safe, Easy, and For Everyone
As Americans gear up for an incredibly important election, (artistic) civil engagement is critical, and I'm rolling up my sleeves for the work ahead. If you're an artist ready to engage and lead your community, be inspired by the guide book, volunteer for local nonprofit organizations, attend Fight For Our Lives: Black Lives Matter Part II, VOTE!, host your own social justice event, or contribute however you can. But the most important is to live up to the words we promise ourselves for a better and just world. And we accomplish it by doing.
